What is Scratch?

Scratch is a block-based programming which enables beginner programmers to focus 100% of their mental energy on the design and logic of their programs. In fact, Scratch was designed to create video games and stories. And who doesn’t enjoy video games? Now, you can make your own video games and share it with your friends and family. And best of all, you can continue to work on your Scratch projects at home!

For Students: age 7 to 10
Pre-requisite: No prior experience required, please bring your own laptop

Outline of Scratch Coding Camp

Day 1

Unit 1: Getting started
Introduction and exploration of Scratch
Unit 2: Exploring
Get comfortable with the key computational concept of sequence by using a limited number of blocks and making a project about yourself.
Unit 3: Animations
Here is when you get to play with visuals and audio to breathe life into your animations with art and music. At the end of this unit, you will build your band, design animated creatures, and create a music video with your favorite song.
Unit 4: Stories
Create your own characters, learn to code conversations, and then place those characters and conversations in shifting scenes. Combine characters, conversations, and scenes in a larger story project that is passed along to other creators to further develop.

Day 2

Unit 5: Games
Connect score and levels to variables, operators and conditionals. Analyze your favorite games, imagine new ones and practice game design.
Unit 6: Diving Deeper
Take a moment to revisit work from prior units & explore advanced concepts!
Unit 7: Hackathon
Put all your learnings and practices into action by designing your own project!
